It's not like the Washington Wizards truly need anyone talking to project top pick AJ Dybantsa into playing in the nation's capital, especially considering the star forward has already made it clear his main goal is to be selected No. 1 overall.
Still, it doesn't hurt to have respected minds around the league put in a good word for a franchise, whose waited quite some time to land a player that could help them escape the constant cycle of mediocrity at the bottom of the NBA standings.
Considering Washington is clearly on the rise, though, it's been clear that the perception surrounding the organization has shifted dramatically over the last year or so, just ask Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown.
Nonetheless, the recent exchange between ESPN's NBA Insider Marc Spears and Dybantsa should be music to the team's ears.
Marc J. Spears explains why Dybantsa should be excited about Washington
In a posted by Dybantsa about his NBA Draft Lottery experience in Chicago, the video featured a conversation between well-respected insider Marc Spears and the BYU star.
Spears was brutally honest about the position Washington has been in over the last few years, but he also made it crystal clear why Dybantsa could be the player to put the city back on the map.
“Huge market, love basketball… It’s like a dormant volcano ready to erupt," Spears told Dybantsa. "It’s just they’ve been terrible, I don’t think you realize what you could do there.”
The insider proceeded to explain how the organization hasn't really had a mainstream talent since Wes Unseld, and if we're being brutally honest, he's not wrong.
Both John Wall and Bradley Beal will go down as Wizards' icons, even Gilbert Arenas, but they haven't had a generational talent in decades.
Sure, the team had Michael Jordan in between, but he wasn't a homegrown talent, and his tenure in Washington isn't enough to really put him on this list.
Spears is right, the Wizards have a major market backing them, and D.C. truly is a basketball city, who's just been stuck watching a bad product.
With Dybantsa in the mix, the fanbase gets the type of talent that can completely turn things around, and that's adding him onto a strong foundation that Will Dawkins has already built, waiting for this moment.
The Wizards are trending upward, and Dybantsa truly could be the final piece to make the team "erupt," so to speak.
